In order to better connect what you learn in this course with the world of business, you will choose 10 videos to watch from the list of MIT World videos below.  These videos feature prominent executives and thought leaders in the field of business.  After viewing each video, you should prepare a 300 word essay summarizing the video, your opinion of the issues raised, and what you learned from the presentation.

Choose 10 of these videos to watch and report upon.  As you finish the class, you should compile these into one paper by copying and pasting the journal text into the body of an e-mail to me through the Blackboard e-mail system associated with this course. If you wish to earn extra credit in this class, you may submit up to 4 additional MIT video essays in that e-mail.

EXAMPLE

Here is an example of what I have in mind for your MIT video essay, based on a presentation by former BP CEO John Browne:

"John Browne discusses the nature of business in his presentation entitled  "The Purpose of Business."  He points out that most people would assume that a business is only out to make a profit, which is incorrect. If a business only wanted money, it would fail. He proceeds to give examples of how creating a positive relationship with the community in which the business operates will yield better results. This is because, according to Browne, a successful business is part of society and exists to meet society’s needs. He also discusses the fact the business is complex. Several issues such as human rights, land ownership, and environmental impacts are not add-ons; they are things which must be dealt with responsibly and sustainably, not to add to the bottom line or win prizes.

"I definitely agree with the message Browne is presenting. Business needs to be responsible and have a positive effect on the world. For example, the world energy's needs will only be provided for by business. Companies need to be trusted by the communities they are in. It’s these companies that will explore, develop, invest, and train individuals to create better energy for everyone.

"The demand for energy is growing; in the last 30 years the demand has doubled. The spread of prosperity has made it so more people can afford energy to improve their standard of living. Without the investments from companies and the incentives provided by governments, we may not be able to have dependable, secure energy. Companies and individuals should invest in many sources of supplies and infrastructure. It is also important to develop diversity so we are not relying on one thing (such as coal) which we can only get through mining operations."

These essays should be compiled and sent to me by e-mail after you have completed all 10 essays.  You should compose your essays on a word processor.  Check each essay carefully for length, as well as spelling, punctuation, and grammar.

I suggest that you take careful notes while watching these streaming videos.  You may watch them as often as you wish.
