"John Browne discusses the nature of business in his presentation entitled "The Purpose of Business." He points out that most people would assume that a business is only out to make a profit, which is incorrect. If a business only wanted money, it would fail. He proceeds to give examples of how creating a positive relationship with the community in which the business operates will yield better results. This is because, according to Browne, a successful business is part of society and exists to meet society’s needs. He also discusses the fact the business is complex. Several issues such as human rights, land ownership, and environmental impacts are not add-ons; they are things which must be dealt with responsibly and sustainably, not to add to the bottom line or win prizes. "I definitely agree with the message Browne is presenting. Business needs to be responsible and have a positive effect on the world. For example, the world energy's needs will only be provided for by business. Companies need to be trusted by the communities they are in. It’s these companies that will explore, develop, invest, and train individuals to create better energy for everyone. "The demand for energy is growing; in the last 30 years the demand has doubled. The spread of prosperity has made it so more people can afford energy to improve their standard of living. Without the investments from companies and the incentives provided by governments, we may not be able to have dependable, secure energy. Companies and individuals should invest in many sources of supplies and infrastructure. It is also important to develop diversity so we are not relying on one thing (such as coal) which we can only get through mining operations." |
